Verified Purchase. Somewhere along the line the standards and criteria by which bands are judged as "Progressive" has been drastically compromised. Maybe I'm getting old but I did not sense anything "progressive" at all about this recording and I suspect that there is evil at work in the minds of music label execs who market any band with a keyboard player that records songs clocking in at over minutes as "Progressive". I bought "Hypothetical" based on the glowing reviews posted on Amazon and to say I was disappointed after three listens is an understatement.
At best, these guys at least this chapter in their career reminded me of a melding of Iron Maiden meets Journey. Lots of cute pop melodies infused with often over-wrought vocals and a mind numbing amount of dum-da-da-dum-da-da-dum 80's power metal guitar chords with very little compositional or improvisational imagination from any of the players to break the monotony. The keyboard work is occasionally interesting but at times seems out of place in context with the rest of what is going on.
The list is endless. There's a lot of the real thing out there and no need to settle for half-baked pseudo progressive rock like this stuff. One person found this helpful. In some ways, Hypothetical is the most important album in the Threshold catalog. Unlike the albums that followed it, the songs on Hypthetical are the result of all band members contributing to the songwriting process and adding their own touch.
It is diverse, progressive, melodic, and atmospheric at the same time -- with some of the finest vocal harmonies you will ever hear in progressive metal.
After Clone, their first album with Mac on vocals, Threshold established their identity and put out their most cohesive body of work. The production is sublime, with great clarity on the instrumentation and tons of nuance for the attentive listener. Crunchy guitar work dominates pretty much every tune, plowing through complex passages underscored by Richard West's trademark synth lines.
West is right up there with Kevin Moore in my books. Soon the band start to open up, with the vocals much more centre stage, and the keyboard solo attempting to power through the twin riffs, but the music is much more than just power chords. There is lightness and shade, majesty and grandeur, but at the base of it all there is a rock band that wants to cure your dandruff and get inside your skull.
This superb CD is available from the web-site at www. If you have yet to discover the joys of Threshold but like your metal melodic and loud then now is the time. The successful Hypothetical tour followed the release of the album who redefined style and brought a lot of new fans. Being finally confident with the line up, the tour went really well and a live album is the right way to celebrate it, thus being not an official release but rather a fan club On The Threshold by Basic Rhythm.
