    On February 3, , American rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died", after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his song "American Pie".Flight origin: Mason City Municipal Airport, Iowa, U.S.

    "American Pie" is a song by American singer and songwriter Don McLean. Recorded and released on the American Pie album in , the single was the number-one US hit for four weeks in starting January 15 after just eight weeks on the Billboard charts (where it entered at number 69). The song also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
