Ahmir "? I thank you for love, for life, for breath, for laughter, for hurt, for struggle, for creativity, for patience, for strength, for compassion, for faith, for music, for the experience. I thank you for each soul that you have allowed to touch, perform or inspire my music. I believer and know you are the source from which all things come so to you, I give back this piece of art, thanking you for it, and dedicating it to you.

Do what you want with it!! Ralph, my father, Omoye young queen so beautiful and vibrant your spirit brings me up. You have work to do but Daddy will be there for you forever — I love you. Erykah I thank GOD for you every day. You have been such a light in my life, inspiring me, opening me up, motivating me to be a better person. A trippy jam that runs more than eight minutes and ends with a burst of sonic dissonance, "Jimi Was A Rock Star" catches Common in a psychedelic mood, as does "Aquarius.

But minor growing pains are a small price to pay for such dramatic growth. The album combines a deep reverence for rap's visceral power with a desire to move the genre beyond its primordial synthesis of beats and rhymes. However, it was not as commercially successful as his previous album, Like Water for Chocolate , selling under , copies. An eclectic album, Electric Circus featured fusions of several genres such as hip hop , pop , rock , electronic , and neo soul.

It wasn't hip hop. Common, Chicago Sun-Times interview [3]. Common worked with a large and eclectic number of musicians on Electric Circus. Among them were Mary J. The second Neptunes collaboration on the record, the cross-genre "I Got A Right Ta", is a musical departure from the styles of both artists, and features Pharrell singing the hook in a blues -inspired style. A triumphant sounding Common proclaims himself "the only cat in hip hop that can go into a thrift shop , bring that get up to the ghetto and get props ".

The song was placed on the B-Side of "Come Close". The 8 minute-plus song is a duet between Common and his then-girlfriend Erykah Badu , which gradually builds up into its cryptic, chanting finale. This song is Common's first all-singing performance. The center-piece of the album, the epic "Heaven Somewhere", features 6 vocalists who all give insight into what their interpretation of Heaven is. Common's father Lonnie Lynn ends the affair with an introspective look at his ideal place.

The album's style tended to divide critics; most praised its ambitious vision while some criticized it for the same reason. Most of the criticism tended to revolve around the album's experimental nature.

Some felt Common had strayed too far from his previous sound. Longtime Common fans also viewed his relationship with Erykah Badu as having an overly experimental influence on him, while some critics compared the album to Marvin Gaye 's I Want You and Richard Ashcroft 's Human Conditions , [17] both of which were experimental works that initially received mixed criticism.

So, is this genius or is this madness? Marvin Gaye tried it. Richard Ashcroft tried it. Score distribution:. Positive: 18 out of Mixed: 4 out of Negative: 0 out of A record of startling breadth. Electric Circus does suffer from that which ails many contemporary hip-hop albums -- too many guests (including a strange appearance by Laetitia Sadier) and a generally lengthy program drag this one down a tad. Nonetheless, Electric Circus is a brave and ruthless statement wrapped in sincerity.8/

Opening with Soul Power, a great track by all means, Electric Circus loses momentum after the garbled mess of Electric Wire Hustler Flower. The Hustle brings the album back with a powerhouse of a beat and chorus. New Wave, the other track sandwhiching the album's phenomenal key single, Come Close (ft. Mary J Blige), is also worthwhile.
