You're a shit! You're not a shit! Lick my shit". On 16 March Russell Lissack was announced as the band's touring guitarist and synthesizer player for their tour dates in New York , Japan and the United Kingdom , Tim Wheeler stated on the band's website; "We first met at the South By South West in , we'd heard he and Kele Okereke met when Russell was playing Ash songs at a party, so we've always felt that connection with him.
We've loved Bloc Party since their first single and have always really admired his guitar playing. The first single from the series "Return of White Rabbit" received fairly mixed reactions, with the band showcasing a more unfamiliar electronic side of the band, however NME reacted positively "a weirdly effective funk-pop song" Kerrang! Mark Beaumont wrote on BBC Music "they've lost none of their melodic punch since Girl From Mars fell to Earth" and praised the consistency of singles A-M "the most remarkable thing about the A—Z project is that, thus far, every track really is worthy of being a single.
Paul Brown at Drowned in Sound described the release format as "While they haven't quite reinvented the wheel with these songs, they have certainly pumped up its tyres and given it some shiny new hubcaps" , speaking with praise of singles A "True Love " through till H "Space Shot" ; "So great are the high points of the collection that it's a shame that it starts to run out of steam slightly towards the end" , yet with final single of the half M "War with Me" he believed it "revives things at the death with a grand piano motif and yet another mega chorus".
Phil Mongredien of Q magazine criticized the similarity between a compilation of singles and the conventional album, writing; "it's not obvious how this format differs from the peaks and troughs of a regular album, high points largely canceled out by the more workaday material" , however noted the albums merits as "Arcadia" and "Joy Kicks Darkness", Jon Bye of Gigwise. Mark Griffiths of Kerrang! As of December the vinyl subscription sold out, with only limited amounts of past and future singles available on the band's official website and other various stores.
But the singles performed better on the UK Indie Singles Chart, with 15 of them reaching the top ten of that chart. There is a total of 26 singles in the A—Z Series , and 13 B-sides. Not all of the singles are radio singles; the ones that are, were accompanied by a music video. The title of each release was revealed the Wednesday after the previous release and was referred to as 'Ash Wednesday'.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The way people listen to music has changed, with the advent of the download the emphasis has reverted to single tracks.
It hasn't helped that most people have forgotten how to make a decent album. I'm constantly disappointed with records I buy. Our vinyls [ sic ] are strictly limited collectors items and are something we really wanted to do as we've always demanded our singles are released on 7". WOA01 expands on WOA98 with the addition of the monthly nutrients fields and the introduction of annual and seasonal zooplankton biomass fields. The WOA01 consists of three CD-ROMs containing global data statistics at standand depth levels by one-degree and five-degree squares of several commonly measured ocean variables, as well as objectively analyzed fields on a one-degree grid of these variables.
As with previous works, ocean profile data from 'observed' depth levels are vertically interpolated to standand depth levels. Extraction utilities are provided. An online version of World Ocean Atlas is also available. These data were compiled using World Ocean Database see below. The ocean variables included in the atlas are: temperature, salinity, oxygen dissolved oxygen, apparent oxygen utilization, and percent oxygen saturation , dissolved inorganic nutrients phosphate, nitrate, and silicate , chlorophyll at standard depth levels, and plankton biomass sampled from 0 - meters.
It is an update to the World Ocean Database , plus it contains some new parameters. Archived Version World Ocean Atlas 3 discs The World Ocean Atlas WOA98 consists of 3 CD-ROMs containing objectively analyzed fields of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, derived oxygen variables Apparent Oxygen Utilization and oxygen saturation , nutrients phosphate, nitrate, silicate and chlorophyll along with fields of various statistics.
The data on each WOA98 CD-ROM consists of statistics of observed vertically interpolated data unanalyzed for one-degree squares and five-degree squares at standard depth levels. The following statistics for each grid square are included: 1 number of observations, 2 mean, 3 standard deviation, 4 standard error of the mean.
World Ocean Database 5 discs Version 2. Since the first release of WOD98, the staff of the Ocean Climate Laboratory have performed additional quality control on the database. Version 2. ODV software will uncompress selected data files and offers users several options for viewing the WOD98 data. Work to date includes quality control of historical in situ temperature, salinity, oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, and silicate data and the preparation of one-degree latitude-longitude mean fields for each of these parameters.
Specifically, this project has produced four ocean atlases describing the global distributions of these parameters and two technical reports TR and TR in the NOAA Technical Reports section in NODC Publications, describing the quality control and processing procedures. Observed and standard level profile data along with quality control flags used in the production of these atlases were made available in a World Ocean Atlas CD-ROM series referred to herein as WOA In addition, the series contains the objectively analyzed one-degree latitude-longitude mean fields for each of the measured parameters, and two derived parameters Apparent Oxygen Utilization and Oxygen Saturation , and five-degree square statistics of standard level values.
Replacement files for the World Ocean Atlas climatological monthly mean temperature fields m are available. These fields have additional quality control to eliminate some unrealistic features in the original fields. Annual climatic cycles of temperature, salinity, and oxygen at various depths, as well as seasonal graphics of vertical variability of these parameters, are given for different areas of these seas. Temporal series of annual anomalies of temperature, salinity, and oxygen for 54 years were developed for every sea.
The old version from remains below. The monthly data distribution plots are provided for each year. The monthly climatic maps of temperature and salinity at the sea surface and depth levels of 5 and 10 meters, are computed using objective analysis.
Intra-annual variability of temperature and salinity of the Sea of Azov is discussed with respect to the quality control of the primary data.
The Atlas also includes, in electronic format, selected copies of rare books and articles about the history of the Sea of Azov exploration and climate studies as well as photos, which provide information about the people and environment of this region.
The electronic DVD version allows one to quantitatively access information for oceanographic variables as well as plankton, benthos, fish, sea birds, and marine mammals. The data is divided into one-degree squares with monthly climatic characteristics calculated for every square, which were used to plot monthly climatological charts of temperature and salinity.
The Atlas also includes, in electronic format, selected copies of rare books and articles on the history of Arctic exploration and climate studies as well as photos and drawings, which provide information about the people and nature of the northern polar latitudes throughout the past two centuries. Temperature and salinity measurements have been conducted since The study describes the seasonal and long-term dynamic of hydrological parameters and plankton abundance, giving special consideration to long-term trends.
The plankton effects of extreme hydrological conditions are estimated and the anomalies of plankton seasonal dynamics during cold and warm, high- and low-salinity years are shown. The influence of long-term salinity-and-temperature variations on the plankton community is examined.
The temperature optima of dominant plankton species are determined according to the long-term dynamics of their abundance. Zooplankton of the Arctic Seas International Ocean Atlas Series: Volume 6 1 disc Physical and biological data for the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions extending from the Barents Sea to the Northwest Pacific, sampled during 25 scientific cruises for the period All primary data are presented on this CD-ROM in a common format, along with maps of the station locations and a listing of zooplankton taxa collected during these cruises.
All taxonomic descriptions have been reviewed against the ITIS taxonomic database and other literature sources. The area is limited to 80N and 30S.
Maps with the temporal distribution of physical and biological variables of the Barents and Kara Seas are presented, with proposed quality control criteria for phytoplankton and zooplankton data. Multiple tables of Arctic Seas species are presented, containing ecological and geographic characteristics for each species, and images of live cells for the dominant phytoplankton species.
Please see the online version. Monthly maps defining the station distribution over the Barents Sea are given for every year. Monthly mean fields of temperature and salinity distribution for the depths 0, 30, 50, , and meters, with a grid distance of 10'x30' are plotted using objective analysis techniques. June Cotton is a common textile fiber, accounting for a quarter of total world fiber use.
These high-cotton counties are primarily concentrated in the southern US, where cotton remains prominent due to shared environmental and sociopolitical histories—the cotton-friendly soil and environment and the legacy of slavery and the plantation system.
Water availability is a major issue facing cotton production; it takes 10, liters of water to produce 2. Institution of Mechanical Engineers. January Accessed July 19, Over half of US agricultural cash receipts come from livestock and poultry.
The population of meat animals in the US has grown over time, linked with the rise of concentrated animal feeding operations CAFOs , or factory farms. Accessed July 21, September 26, December 14, August 25, Accessed 21 July The US has the largest fed-cattle industry in the world and is the largest producer of beef for both export and domestic use; yet it is a net beef importer.
Cow-calf operations are commonly located on range and pasture lands not appropriate for crop production. Cattle are widespread throughout the US, often at low densities, with feedlots concentrated west of the Great Lakes megaregion. The county with the highest concentration, San Bernardino County in California, has The consolidation seen in crop agriculture is also occurring in the beef sector, with a general trend toward fewer, larger, and more intensive operations.
However, the industry is highly concentrated, primarily in the Great Lakes megaregion and in North Carolina; in regions where production is prevalent, pig operations are at high densities. Duplin County, North Carolina, for example has pigs per acres on average. With a growing US human population and increasing consumer demand, more chickens are being bred, held in captivity, and killed than ever before.
Chicken farming is highly concentrated, mostly running in a band across the South. Most US counties have little or no chicken farming, with Only The highest density is in Gilmer County, Georgia, with over , chickens per acres. In the US, eighteen large-scale conservation efforts overlap across the country and over national borders to improve habitat connectivity throughout the half of the country they occupy.
The projects vary in size from , to ,, acres; these boundaries include protected, semi-protected, and not protected lands. The project with the highest proportion of protected lands is the proposed Big Bend—Rio Bravo International Park, with March 27, Most of these protected areas are concentrated in the West; this has roots in historical US settler colonialism and expansion.
Settlement along the East Coast was largely driven by private individuals and entities, whereas land in the interior and West was generally acquired first by the federal government. US hotspots include the California floristic province and the North American coastal plain, both coastal regions. The California floristic province contains a wide variety of ecosystems, perhaps most famously the sequoia tree ecosystem, home to the endangered giant sequoia and coast redwood.
Other threatened species inhabiting this hotspot include the endangered giant kangaroo rat, the desert slender salamander, and the critically endangered California condor. This hotspot is a fire-dependent region, and is threatened by fire suppression which inhibits the cycle of the native vegetation , deforestation for agriculture, and infrastructure development.
The climate crisis also now adds to the vulnerability of plants and animals in the hotspots. October 19, Mittermeier, Cristina G.
Environmental risks to humans vary significantly across the different regions and climates of the US. Some are products of oceanic and atmospheric forces, like flooding and tornadoes. Others, like earthquakes, are geological in origin—although mounting evidence suggests that hydraulic fracturing fracking and natural gas exploration may increase the risk of moderate earthquakes.
The Atlantic coast is at high risk for hurricanes, flooding, and moderate earthquakes. The Great Lakes megaregion, with a significant portion of US surface water, is mainly at risk from flooding. The Midwest is primarily at risk from tornados; the regions west of the Rockies face significant risks from earthquakes, wildfires, and floods. The Pacific coast is at high risk from earthquakes due to the presence of the San Andreas fault, which is overdue for a significant earthquake.
The US has seen several major disasters in the past century. As the climate crisis progresses, the number, frequency, and intensity of these events is likely to increase. This map is an illustrative and incomplete accounting of their impacts. The entirety of the US was inhabited by Indigenous peoples before their displacement by European settler colonial regimes and the disease, violence, and coercion that they brought with them.
Accessed August 20, Once occupying the entirety of the continent, tribal members now are sovereign over just 6. Intense tribal displacement and land theft left eastern tribal lands fragmented and small, whereas in the western US larger areas were set aside by the US government as tribal lands. Treaty rights have historically governed this partitioning, but the rights have always been only selectively applied. There are reservations in the US, holdings of single and shared tribal oversight.
Legal frameworks of tribal sovereignty recognize the right of Indigenous tribes to govern themselves, acting as domestic dependent nations within the area of the US. There are currently recognized tribes at the federal level, 63 tribes unrecognized at the federal level but recognized by a state a situation allowed in 11 states , and tribes as of unrecognized by the government but which have petitioned for recognition.

Transmission lines connect the US, forming corridors that pulse in every direction across the continent.
Energy plants are present across the US, with a heavy concentration on the East Coast; this concentration diffuses toward the Great Lakes and Texas Triangle megaregions.
Further west, infrastructure is minimal, with the exception of the energy-dense West Coast. The construction of the modern energy grid began in with the inauguration of the Pearl Street station in Manhattan. These generation and transmission systems and utilities came under stronger federal regulation in and have remained largely unchanged since then. DC Power. As of , the US government had 71 air force bases inside the conterminous US and 36 outside; 66 army bases inside and 59 outside; 38 Coast Guard bases on US territory; 10 joint operations bases outside the US; 19 Marine Corps bases inside and 18 outside; and 75 navy bases inside and 21 outside.
Understandably, these military bases line the coasts and sit along major roads. There are few bases near the land borders with Canada and Mexico. Due to historical settlement patterns and water transportation, most major cities in the US have a port.
These port cities sit on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, as well as along the Great Lakes, the Gulf Coast, and the Mississippi and other inland rivers.
Department of Transportation — Federal Aviation Administration. There are more than four thousand universities in the US. These can be grouped into three broad categories: private colleges and universities; public and land grant institutions; and historically black colleges and universities HBCUs and minority-serving institutions MSIs. The land grant institutions were a response to industrialization pressures in the late nineteenth century. One subset of land grant institutions are the tribal colleges and universities, authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Reauthorization Act, which focus on teaching, community outreach, and research in Indigenous communities.
HBCUs are institutions established before the Civil Rights Act of to serve the black community in response to the segregation of higher education. There are currently HBCUs offering undergraduate and graduate education, largely concentrated in the Southeast, where segregation was historically most prevalent.
Settlement patterns in the second half of the twentieth century reached such a spatial extent to warrant a new unit of urbanization.
Regional Plan Association. This map shows a range of visionary large-scale planning initiatives, some realized, some not. Variously inspiring and cautionary, these big ideas serve as speculative precedents for current debates about national-scale planning and investment in relation to the climate crisis and a Green New Deal.
Sea level rise is expected to radically reshape the physical and social geography of the coastal US. These maps draw on models developed by the sociologist and demographer Mathew Hauer, the first scholar to assess the number of structures—and therefore people—that can be expected to be inundated by sea level rise over the course of the twenty-first century. These maps are visualizations of this work, showing major trends in in-migration toward coastal cities and the gulf coast.
These regions will be the primary receiving zones for climate refugees moving within the US. They do not incorporate the expected influx of foreign climate refugees.
In-migration and out-migration patterns suggest that the US population is moving from cities to cities, crisscrossing the nation. Many of the states with large out-migration populations also have large in-migration populations, but the populations are not moving within the state.
Many of the out-migration counties are coastal counties already facing challenges from sea level rise. This includes The total land area of the US divided by its total population, however, is below ten acres, meaning that US individuals must draw on land elsewhere in the world to satisfy their current lifestyles. Those who identify as two or more races will more than double, from 2. Adding million new people to the US by will require massive expansions of, and investments in, communities; it will also require densifying our cities. Most demographers expect an increasing share of these people will live in large cities like New York, Chicago, and Phoenix. If the next million live in high-density cities, equivalent to New York, then they will require 12 new New Yorks based on the population of 8,, —with approximately one new New York constructed every 3.
If they live in medium-density cities, equivalent to Chicago, then they will require 36 new Chicagos based on the population of 2,, —with about one constructed every 14 months. Finally, if the next million choose to live in a low-density suburban configuration, equivalent to Phoenix, then they will require 68 new Phoenixes based on the population of 1,, —approximately one new Phoenix every 7 months.
