Midge Ure — I think it was quite possibly the icing on the cake. When we did get back together to find that we still had a lot in common and we enjoyed doing it, we decided that we had opened some doors that we never dreamed of opening again and we would leave Ultravox sitting on a shelf dormant, just waiting.
If an interesting project came along, we might consider it; a movie soundtrack, or writing music for theater, or something that would inspire us. We were also committed to doing all our own individual solo projects, two of the guys have jobs. We decided we would just leave it sitting there, but that was over 2 years ago now last that we did any live performance.
It is extremely well composed record with a very mature and beautiful sound. There is certainly a lot of emotion in the tracks. What was the writing and recording process like for you on this album?
Midge Ure — I am very proud of that record. I lost my way somewhere along the line, I got myself in trouble with a bit of alcohol. I was a kind of lost soul. When I finally pulled myself out of that, I had a wealth of things, life experiences to write about.
I set about making an album that just said everything that I was feeling, living the experiences. I think that was a huge realization; for years, I felt as if I had been carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.
To find out that I was just human like everybody else was a bit of a shock; that I can crack and crumble just the same as anybody else, so I wrote about that. It was an incredibly brutally, honest record, but as you say, I wanted it to be beautiful, fragile, to sound like it was going to fall apart. I am very proud of it. You have been working on soundtrack music and such.
Do you have plans for doing another solo record in the forthcoming future? When I am not traveling I am in the studio. I am constantly hacking away on new pieces of music.
You are a very busy guy, you are always on the road. You connected with the audience with the music and what music should be all about. You have also seen a lot change in the music industry through the years. What is your opinion of the state of the music world in ? I think the shockwaves, the file sharing and the Napsters, of the world that have been created has devastated certain parts of the industry.
I had no crew, I had no manager, no tour manager, nothing. It was me, a guitar, and a bunch of songs. I set that up specifically to document. I filmed the entire thing and I came back and turned it into a one-man-takes-on-America documentary simply to show young aspiring songwriters and musicians how difficult it is out there doing it.
I am reasonably established, I am not that well known in America, but in certain areas, people know who I am, so I am already a few rungs up the ladder. New music is the lifeblood of the industry. I love to hear something come on the radio that excites me. This wonderful, but things can slip through the cracks. You can easily get lost in the shuffle, there is an over-saturation. Ure also played an acoustic set of Ultravox and Visage songs. Egan and Ure also formed the short-lived band The Misfits , whose career was curtailed by an approach from Thin Lizzy.
Though Visage's first single was unsuccessful, they signed with Polydor Records in ; their second single, " Fade to Grey ", became a hit. Thin Lizzy then toured America and Japan. In , during the second part of this tour, Ure switched to keyboards, and was replaced by Dave Flett and then Snowy White as guitarist.
At the end of the tour Ure left Thin Lizzy and returned to his primary interest at that time, Ultravox. Ure continued to collaborate with Lynott, co-writing Lynott's biggest solo hit, " Yellow Pearl ".
In , Ure and Billy Currie formed a close bond playing together in Visage. Ultravox had been presumed defunct since guitarist Robin Simon quit and lead singer John Foxx had left to pursue a solo career.
In April Ure regrouped the band and assumed duties as singer, songwriter, guitarist and second keyboardist. This second incarnation would become the classic line-up, with Currie keyboards, violin , Chris Cross bass and Warren Cann electronic drums.
During this time the band wrote a number of songs which were included on their first album with Ure. The album, Vienna , was recorded in Although it was the band's fourth album, it was the first with Ure, and the first one to chart, although it was only a minor success on first release.
However, when the title track " Vienna " was released as a single in early it became a huge hit and spent four weeks at no. The album itself re-entered the album chart and peaked at no. Inspired by the film The Third Man , the promo video for "Vienna" was directed by Russell Mulcahy utilising cinematic techniques, and became quite influential. In an interview Ure recalled the way that "music video changed after that.
After its release Ure and Currie reconvened with Visage to record the band's second album, The Anvil. Released in early , it was a Top 10 hit; but Ure left the band soon after its release, citing creative differences with frontman Steve Strange. The same year saw Ultravox record and release their third album with Ure, Quartet , with production by Beatles producer George Martin. The album became their third Top 10 hit and featured four Top 20 singles.
This period saw Ure work as a producer for other artists, amongst them Steve Harley , Skids , Peter Godwin , and Strasse , and in he released his first solo single, a cover of the Tom Rush song " No Regrets " based on the hit cover version by The Walker Brothers , which made the UK Top After the live album Monument in Ultravox released their fourth studio album with Ure, Lament , in The band released their first "greatest hits" album at the end of the year, featuring all the singles from onwards.
The album peaked at no. After Ure's successful debut solo album in , the fifth and final Ultravox album with Ure, U-Vox , was released in Although another Top 10 hit, the album and singles fared less well than their earlier releases. We had a long break from each other and when we came back together we were all working in different directions".
I had decided that I was leaving before we did our last European tour, the U-Vox tour. We were in Italy. Ure stated in a BBC interview in April , "we are not trying to get our youth back, nor the hair that's fallen off already". In late , Ultravox started working on their sixth album fronted by Ure. This album, titled Brilliant , was released in May In November , Ultravox were special guests on a four-date arena tour with Simple Minds.
Ure was rehearsing with Ultravox for an episode of the Channel 4 music show " The Tube " when host Paula Yates handed him the phone. Geldof provided the initial lyrics, with Ure working the musical theme on a small keyboard in his kitchen. Welcome to Ultravox. You can view the Official Ultravox fanzine issues here.
